Student Email Recipient Limit

Overview

This article describes what students should do when they receive a "Message blocked" or "bounced" email after trying to send an email to large list of people.

Instructions

JCCC blocks emails that can potentially be flagged as spam. If students try to send an email to more than 25 recipients the message will be blocked and flagged as spam. To send an email to more than 25 people, students instead have to send the same email but for two or more different groups of people. An easy way to do this is by using labels.

To create a label:

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, click "Create contact," then click "Create multiple contacts."
  3. At the top of the pop-up window, click "No Label," then click "Create label."
  4. Name the label whatever you want (ex: Theatre Group 1 or Theatre Group 2).
  5. Click on "Add names, email addresses or both." Type in the email addresses of all recipients.
    • Make sure no more than 25 recipients are in one label. If you need to send to more than 25 people, separate the recipients in two labels.
  6. At the bottom of the pop-up window, click "Create."

To add recipients to an existing label:

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, click "Create contact," then click "Create multiple contacts."
  3. At the top of the pop-up window, click "No Label," then click your existing label.
  4. Click on "Add names, email addresses or both." Type in the email addresses of all recipients.
  5. At the bottom of the pop-up window, click "Create."

To send an email to everyone in a single label:

  1. Open Gmail.
    • If you need help accessing your stumail account, click here.
  2. On the left, click "Compose."
  3. In the "To, Cc, or Bcc" sections, type in the name of your label.
    • If your label doesn't show up, refresh the page. If this still doesn't work, click on the words "To, Cc, or Bcc" to open a pop-up window. On the right, click on "My contacts," then click the name of your label. On the left, click "Select All." Finally, click "Insert" at the bottom.
  4. Click on the name of your label. This should automatically place the emails into the "To, Cc, or Bcc" sections based on your selection.
    • If you had to do things the other way, all recipients names should already be there since you clicked "Insert."
  5. Finish and send your email!

Note: Please verify that the recipients' email was typed in correctly. Additionally, if the recipient's email box is full, the message may still be blocked.
