Create a New Folder in Windows and Macintosh

Overview


While many folders are created by the operating system or by the applications you use, you can also create folders to organize your files. This article has instructions to create a folder in Windows and in Macintosh.

 

Instructions


Windows

  1. Right click on the desktop or in a open area in a File Explorer.
  2. Select New.
  3. Select Folder.
  4. Type desired name in Folder text area.
  5. Select Enter.

Macintosh

  1. Select the Finder icon in the Dock to open a Finder window, then navigate to where you want to create the folder.
  2. Select File, New Folder, or press Shift-Command-N.
  3. Enter a name for the folder.
  4. Select Return.
