Unable to View Canvas Course


This article describes some scenarios in which a student will be unable to view a Canvas course.



Students are unable to view a Canvas course under any of the following conditions:

  • The course has not yet been Published by the instructor.
  • The course Start Date has not yet occurred.
  • The course does not Exist.

Students can verify the course contents are published by going to Courses > All Courses in Canvas. The course will show under future enrollments with a subtitled "Published: Yes". This means the course and its contents won't be available until a date set by the instructor. Most often, instructors will set that date to be the first day of class.

NOTE: Contact your instructor if you are still unable to view the class materials on the course start date.

If students can access the class, but it is not showing up in their dashboard, perform the following:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Select Courses.
  3. Select All Courses.
  4. In the course list, select the star next to the course to have it display on the Dashboard.
    • If the star is colored it will display on the Dashboard.
    • If the star is not colored it will not display on the Dashboard.
